UNIDEB is a higher education center situated in Debrecen, the second largest city in Hungary with a population around 250,000 and growing yearly. It comprises of various courses of which most are offered in English language and open to International students. The University of Debrecen has a student body of 30,000, out of which 18,600 are full-time students. More than 1700 instructors teach at the University, making it one of the largest higher education institutions in Hungary. The quality of tutelage and especially research is indicated by the fact that more than half of the instructors have doctoral (PhD) degrees, and 23 professors are members of the Hungarian Academy of Sciences.

The University of Debrecen, like all higher education institutes, conducts its programs according to the European Qualifications Framework of the Bologna Process.

  • Diplomas attained at the University of Debrecen are generally accepted in the countries of the European Union.
  • Medical programs are accredited by the World Health Organization (WHO), The State Education Department (NY, USA), Medical Board of California the General Medicine Council (UK – PLAB exam is compulsory), Medical Councils of Israel, Ireland, Iran, Norway and the United Arab Emirates. It is accepted for registration purposes in most other European countries and in India, where a qualifying exam is required.

The student population contains an interesting mix of nations. This includes Nigerians, Asians, Scandinavians, Germans, Arabs, Ghanaians, Israelis, and Cameroonians to name a few. The African community has quite a strong presence in Debrecen. Most of the African students attend The New Covenant Church (NCC) while there is also Catholic Mass for students in English at St. Laszlo church. There are two other churches that have Sunday worship in English, Life church and The House. Students have the option of attending church according to their denominations. Muslim students also pray at the student hostel.

Courses Offered in University of Debrecen:

 

Medical Programs

 General Medicine Program: (Duration of Studies: 10 semesters + 1 year clinical practice. The tuition fee for the 1st year of the General Medicine Program is 16,000 USD if the total yearly tuition fee is paid in one installment before registration to the first semester. The tuition fee can be paid in two installments than 8,800 USD is due before registration in September 8,200 USD has to be paid before registration to the second semester in February (totally 17,000 USD). The Curriculum of the first three years focuses on theoretical aspects of medicine including the theoretical background of diseases as well as the foundations of internal medicine and surgery. The next two years deal with pharmacology and clinical subjects, while the final year is dedicated to final examinations and the defense of a thesis. Medical and health-related education has particularly strong foundations within the University of Debrecen. In fact, it is one of the largest hospitals in Hungary, with 18 clinical departments, accommodating more than 1,400 inpatient beds.

Although the language of instruction is English, foreign students are required to learn some Hungarian to be able to communicate with patients. Proficiency in Hungarian is not a prerequisite of the admission to the international medical program.

 

Dentistry Program: (Dentistry (Doctor of Dental Medicine): Duration of Studies: 10 semesters. The tuition fee for the 1st year of the Dentistry Program is 15,500 USD if the total yearly tuition fee is paid in one installment before registration to the first semester. The tuition fee can be paid in two installments, then 8,800 USD is due before registration in September and 7,700 USD has to be paid before registration to the second semester in February (totally 16,500 USD). Material cost: in addition to the tuition fee 1,000 USD/semester material cost must be paid from the 3rd year on. The five-year-program has been carefully structured to ensure a high standard of knowledge, skills and responsibility of dental surgeons.

 

Pharmacy Program: (Pharmacy (Doctor of Pharmacy): Duration of Studies: 10 semesters. The tuition fee for the 1st year of the Pharmacy Program is 8,000 USD. The Pharmacy Program of the University of Debrecen has a dual admission program for undergraduate studies and for a select number of highly motivated, and highly qualified students interested in pursuing both undergraduate and professional studies in Pharmacy and health care related education.

 

Public Health and Physiotherapy: BSc in Public Health and BSc in Physiotherapy: Duration of Studies: 8 semesters. The program trains specialists capable of monitoring Public Health problems as well as planning, implementing and evaluating interventions to solve them. Physiotherapy: The program prepares students for the prevention, medication and rehabilitation of movement system disorders and other diseases using the therapeutic tools of physiotherapy. Tuition fee: 6,000 USD/year (including student’s handbooks, use of library and IT facilities

 

MSc in Public Health: Duration of studies: 3 semesters Tuition fee: 8,000 USD/year (including student’s handbooks, use of library and IT facilities) The tuition fee for students who graduated from the University of Debrecen and want to receive MSc degree is 6,000 USD/year. The objective of the MSc course in Public Health is to equip those who have completed their studies with knowledge and skills for monitoring and analyzing the factors influencing the health status of the population, exploring and prioritizing health-related needs and requirements, drafting local, regional and national health policy aimed at solving public health problems, planning and organizing services to promote health care and prevent and cure diseases based on the needs of the target population, implementing and managing health-promoting and disease-preventing interventions, and finally analyzing and evaluating the effectiveness of those services and interventions.)

 

MSc in Molecular Biology: Duration of Studies: 4 semesters. Tuition fee: 8,500 USD/year (including use of library and IT facilities) Students with the following degrees may apply and be accepted if they have a minimum of 40 out of the required 60 credits from criteria subjects. The program will enable its graduates to use the skills they have acquired in the fields of economics, social sciences, applied economics, methodology and their chosen specialization, to plan and analyze the activities of business organizations and institutions, and to direct and organize the activities of managers and companies.

These classes employ problem oriented teaching methods and use a range of case studies and situational exercises.

 

International Economics and Business MA: Duration of Studies: 4 semesters. Tuition fee: 6,500 USD/year The aim of the program is to prepare specialists in economics and business using the basic skills acquired in the fields of international-, micro- and macroeconomics, international politics, European integration, international law, regional studies, civilization/globalization and their chosen specialization enable them to analyze, plan, make decisions and control the activities of business organizations and institutions in an international context.

 

Business Development, MSc: Duration of Studies: 4 semesters. Tuition fee: 6,500 USD/year. The program trains experts capable of analyzing the activities of an enterprise and solving complex business development tasks. At the same time graduates will possess high-level business development and managerial skills to be able to fulfill positions as middle and top managers in international business life.

Software Information Technology, BSc: Duration of Studies: 6 semesters. Tuition fee: 5,500 USD/year. The aim of the program is to train IT professionals who, possessing the solid theoretical grounding, are capable of performing at an advanced level the typically software-oriented development, implementation and servicing tasks related to IT equipment and systems.

 

Business Information Technology, BSc: Duration of Studies: 7 semesters. Tuition fee: 5,500 USD/year. The aim of the program is to train IT professionals who are capable of understanding and resolving the specific business processes underlying the information-based society, managing the IT tasks that support value-creating processes, and making the best use of the opportunities presented by modern information technology.

 

Engineering Information Technology, BSc: Duration of Studies: 7 semesters. Tuition fee: 5,500 USD/year. The aim of the program is to train IT engineers who have the skills needed to plan, develop and service technical installations that utilize IT-based solutions, especially with regard to technical and infrastructural systems and services, as well as their data and software systems. Students obtain practical engineering techniques associated with the installation and commissioning of IT infrastructure.

Biochemical Engineering, BSc: Duration of Studies: 7 semesters. Tuition fee: 5,500 USD/year. The aim of the program is to enable students to be competent in all fields of biotechnology by obtaining deep theoretical knowledge and also practical (engineering and technological) skills. Students will have their own experience in laboratory and manufacturing practices that a biochemical engineer may encounter in the everyday work.

 

Chemical Engineering, BSc: Duration of Studies: 7 semesters. Tuition fee: 5,500 USD/year. Our objective is to train professionals who possess the general knowledge, technical intelligence and the basics of natural, social and engineering sciences that are essential for the practice of the chosen profession. It is likewise important that students acquire the most essential skills in technology and safety, environmental protection, management and social sciences

 

Civil Engineering, BSc: Duration of Studies: 8 semesters. Tuition fee: 5,500 USD/year. Civil engineering is a professional engineering discipline that deals with the design, construction, and maintenance of the physical and naturally built environment, including works like roads, bridges, canals, dams, and buildings. Civil engineering takes place on all levels: in the public sector from municipal through to national governments, and in the private sector from individual homeowners through to international companies.

 

Electrical Engineering, BSc: Duration of Studies: 7 semesters. Tuition fee: 5,500 USD/year. A solid basic education in the Electrical Engineering BSc program provides a foundation for a successful career in industry and prepares students for further studies in engineering and informatics.

 

Mechanical Engineering, BSc: Duration of Studies: 7 semesters. Tuition fee: 5,500 USD/year. The aim of the program is to train professionals who possess a well-grounded theoretical knowledge as well as practical skills in technology, system engineering, designing software (CAD, CAE, CAM and FEM), quality management and maintenance strategies.

 

Mechatronics Engineering, BSc: Duration of Studies: 7 semesters. Tuition fee: 5,500 USD/year. Mechatronics Engineering is relatively a new branch of science and engineering and is defined as “combination of mechanical engineering, electronic engineering, computer engineering, software engineering, control engineering, and systems design engineering in order to design, and manufacture useful products. It is a multidisciplinary field of engineering, that is to say it rejects splitting engineering into separate disciplines.

 

Agricultural programs

Agricultural Engineering, BSc: Duration of Studies: 7 semesters. Tuition fee: 5,500 USD/year The aim of the program is to train agricultural engineers who have general knowledge in the field of natural-, technical-, agricultural sciences, economic knowledge of the area of agricultural production, general expertise in agricultural processing and farming. Besides the theoretical knowledge emphasis is put on practical training and on the acquisition of different technological processes.

 

Agribusiness and Rural Development Engineering, BSc: Duration of Studies: 7 semesters. Tuition fee: 5,500 USD/year

The aim of the program is to educate future agribusiness and rural development engineers who are qualified for the organization and management of all the different activities in production, service and consultancy.

Agricultural Engineering, MSc: Duration of Studies: 4 semesters. Tuition fee: 6,500 USD/year.

The program is designed to develop the students undergraduate knowledge and improve it through application and research. The aim of the course is to train professional economist who, with their in –depth theoretical and practical knowledge in production, commerce, marketing and finance and with the possession of adequate ecological approach are able to perform executive duties in the macro-and micro economic interrelations of agricultural production and the business sector.

PROGRAMS AND FEES IN THE 2014/2015 ACADEMIC YEAR

For students who require additional instruction in English language or other subjects they are to take up during their studies, the University offers one or two semesters of preparatory courses. They are called the Basic Medicine Course (BMC) for medical programs and Foundation Program for Engineering, IT and Business. The premedical (Basic Medicine) course of one or two semesters is recommended for those not having enough knowledge in Biology, Physics and Chemistry from high school. In addition to these subjects, courses in English, Latin and basic Hungarian are also included. The one- or two-semester Foundation Program includes Engineering, Management or Science courses, according to the student’s chosen principle as well as English and Basic Hungarian.

Students may choose to sit for the entrance examination organized in Debrecen for the January Basic Medicine Course of the Academic Year 2014/2015. Students may choose to sit for an entrance examination on:

18th November, 2014 or

8th January, 2015

Entrance exam fee: 350 USD

The deadline of application for the January intake of the Academic Year 2014/2015 is 30th November, 2014.

Entrance examination would consist of:

  • written test from Biology, Chemistry and Physics (1 hour);
  • oral exam compulsory from Biology and  Physics or Chemistry.

BSc in Physiotherapy, BSc in Public Health, MSc in Public Health and MSc in Molecular Biology applicants need to sit for an entrance interview only, there is no written test. As part of the oral interview the committee tests the English communicational skills and the motivation of the applicant.
The fee of the entrance interview is the same as the entrance exam, 350 USD.
